The festivals of the island are many.
They all start on the Eve of the feast of each saint.
In most of them you can enjoy the local music and dance
in a special traditional feast!
5th May: St. Eleni at Koutalas
21st May: St. Constadinos & Eleni at Hora
Holly Spirit at M. Horio and at Panagia Liomandra
1st July: St. Anargiron at Kalavatsana
17th July: St. Marina
27th July: St. Panteleimon
6th August: Sotiros at Pyrgos
14th August:
From the evening of 14th of August the festivals start at all churches
dedicated to Panagia: at Ramos, Skopiani, Liomandra
and go on, on the 15th at St. Nicolaos at Pyrgos.
On the 16th they all end up at the village of Panagia to celebrate
under the old olive tree in the middle of the square.
23rd August: Panagia Emiliani
7th September: St. Sostis
8th September: Panagia of Avessalos
24th September: St. Thekla
8th November: at the Monastery of Taxiarhes
25th November: St. Ekaterini
A special celebration of the island is the one of Kapetania
on the last Sunday of the Carnival. It dates back to the
16th century and it refers to the Greek revolution against
the Turkish domination. It is a celebration full of folklore
and Christian characteristics.
