During the Turkish domination it was the religious and economic centre of the island.           The icon screen was painted by E. Skordilis and it is a characteristic sample of the Cretan school of hagiography         It was built in the 1600’s and it resembles a fortress.         Important religious relics, manuscripts and codes are kept in the sacristy. The icon of archangel Michael is thought to be miraculous.   According to the legend, it showed the place where the monastery had to be built.
